Music Curriculum - Early Years

Communication and Language

The children will:

  • begin take part in singing, chanting and speaking.

  • begin to listen attentively and follow instructions.

  • respond to songs through actions and physical movement.

Physical Development

The children will:

  • develop co-ordination through performing actions to songs.

  • develop fine and gross motor skills through performing action to songs and experimenting with a range of musical instruments.

  • improve the control of physical movement through dance and rhythmic games.

Personal, social and emotional development

The children will:

  • begin to express their thoughts and feelings in relation to the music their hear.

  • learn to take turns and play co-operatively through musical games and activities.

  • develop self confidence through performing as a class.

 

Literacy development

The children will:

  • learn songs to consolidate their phonic knowledge.

  • expand their vocabulary through learning topic-related songs.

 

Mathematics development

The children will:

  • learn a variety of counting songs to consolidate their understanding of number.

  • develop an understanding of patterns through learning simple, rhymes, chants and playing musical games.

  • build spatial awareness through experimenting with physical movement.

Understanding of the World

The children will:

  • listen and respond to a range of music from different times and cultures.

  • learn to sing songs on a variety of themes.

  • learn to use simple recording devices.

 

Expressive arts and design

The children will:

  • explore and create sounds with their voices, bodies and a variety of objects and instruments.

  • engage their imagination through role play, dance and musical composition.
